Introduction to a Bear-Loving Artist

Hey everyone, I’m Taylor! I’m a junior and visual communications major from Oklahoma City.

One of my favorite things to do is draw, and I do that constantly, both digitally and traditionally. I love how art has endless possibilities, and how it allows me to bring the ideas in my head to life! Besides graphic design, I am also interested in conceptual art (for movies, games, and TV shows), character design, and storyboarding. Animation also seems very fun and I would like to learn that as well.

Another thing about me is that I love bears! I hope that one day I can see them up close (but not dangerously close) in the wild. They’re the best.

I also love dogs, and I have three of them. I have Hunter and Fancy who are chihuahuas (they’re siblings), and a malamute named Aspen. Aspen is a giant that doesn’t realize how big she is, and she loves attention from anyone who gives it to her. Fancy is kind of a glutton (and licks fabric), but she’s the sweetest dog I know.

(Aspen is on the left, and Fancy is on the right. Both of these are my photos)

Her brother Hunter CAN be sweet, to a select few people, but he hates almost everybody. He’s definitely a stereotypical chihuahua.

(And this is a photo I took of Hunter)

I don’t actually own a cat, but our neighbor’s cat comes to visit a lot. Her name is Julie and she’s adorable. When I leave the house she always runs from across the street to say hi.

As for my summer, nothing super interesting happened. I didn’t end up going anywhere but I enjoyed the time away from school. I did watch a lot of Big Brother though (that show where they lock a bunch of people in a house to win a half million dollars), and tried to teach myself how to cook. I made lemon bars twice, but they ended up tasting like play-doh both times. Oh well.

  1. Hey Taylor! Visual communications seems like such a cool major. I know several people in it, and they all really enjoy it. I love being around other creative people, so I'm glad we're in the same blog group this week! Aspen is so cute!! I'm not as crazy about chihuahuas though. I have one at home. His name is Skip, and he's definitely a stereotypical chihuahua like Hunter. Fancy seems very sweet though.

  2. Hi Taylor! I hear that the Visual Communication program takes a lot of work, but is very rewarding. What would you consider a dream job? Bears are awesome, I completely agree. You really seem like an animal person, and I can relate. I think I like people ten times more when I find out they have pets. Have you done some storyboarding of your own? I'd love to see what sort of design work you've done as well. I also like being surrounded by creative types. Nice to meet you!

  3. Taylor, this is great: as you can guess, bears are a HUGELY important character in fairy tales and folklore and legends from all over the world. So if that is something you are interested in, definitely follow up on that as a possible project topic! Can you believe nobody has ever done a Storybook in this class about bears...? We need more bears! :-)
And here are some units in the UnTextbook which have bears... and this is just a few of them:
    Fables of Bidpai
    Brer Rabbit
    Sioux Legends
    Blackfoot Stories
    Grimm (LibriVox)
    Czech Folktales
... and more too! So if you are interested in looking for famous bears in folklore, that would be great. See Wikipedia too: Bear: Culture ... enjoy! :-)

  4. Hi Taylor! I think its so cool that your're a Visual Communication major, what do you ideally want to do with that major once you graduate? Also I think its awesome that you love drawing and are so good at it. Honestly I'm super jealous beacause I can hardly draw stick figures and I think drawing is one of those super speacial talents like being a good senior. Also I'm a big fan of bears too, my favorite is a polar bear. Your dogs are so dang cute, I think my favorite is Fancy she looks so cute and cuddly.

  6. Hi Taylor. I love your interest in drawing bears. My brother lives in Alaska so I have been able to see one in person and they are amazing creatures. I wish I could draw, but all I have down is simple art nothing to much. Love the pictures of your dogs. I had a boxer who lived to be 19 years and had an amazing time with him, so I bet you have great memories with your dogs.

  7. Hi Taylor! I know someone who just switch to your major! And I also did graphic design in high school. It was a lot of fun but I am no artist. I'm that kid when the teacher says to draw something for an assignment I draw stick figures. And bears are the best! I hope you get a chance someday to see them in the wild!

  8. Hi Taylor,

I find it really cool that you are into so many different mediums of art. Personally, I stick to painting with acrylic or watercolor but graphic design and animation have always fascinated me. I can totally relate to the less than stellar cooking attempts, cooking seems to be the one art form that is beyond me.

Also I am commenting on your introduction after reading your Quarrel of the cat and dog story and I can now see why that was such a fitting choice for you!

  9. Nice to meet you Taylor! I too am from Oklahoma City! I think your love of art is awesome and I am jealous of your ability to draw. I love art and wish I had an artistic ability. I also commend you on your love of bears and hope to see them in the wild, that would scare me to death. Dogs are pretty cool, I’m a cat lover myself, but I do have a 6 month old German Shepard who is like a child. I like how honest you were about your cooking skills. That was very humorous!

  10. Hey, Taylor! I LOVE malamutes- and really all dogs. Yours are adorable! I think it's super cool that you draw so much with different mediums. I wish I was talented in that area. Also I totally dig lemon bars but I agree they're not the easiest to make- Ive tried a couple times and failed miserably. Nice to meet you! Im excited to read more from you throughout the semester.

  11. Ah, wow, your love of art is so cool. Making concept art and storyboards and character designs would be insanely wizard—I definitely wish you the best of luck with that. I’d love to write for TV someday, live-action or animated (I grew up on superhero cartoons, and they’re pretty much still my heart and soul), so I’m excited just to meet someone interested in that kind of thing. What sort of stuff do you like to draw?

Also, I totally commiserate with you on the no-cooking thing. I don’t try to pick up cooking very often—but when I do, I inevitably end up slinking back to the microwave, haha.

Anyways, nice to meet you! I’m looking forward to reading your story.

  12. Hi Taylor, I think that is so cool that you have such a passion for drawing. I wish I could draw, but unfortunately, the only thing I can manage is a stick figure. Also, your dogs are absolutely adorable. Anyways, I am glad I got to read a little bit about you and I look forward to reading more of your posts in the future!

  13. Hi Taylor! That's awesome you are so into drawing, I wish I could draw too. My boyfriend is an amazing artist and I have always been very envious. Your dog, Aspen, looks so much like my old childhood dog named Dakota. I love huskys, malamutes, or any type of wolf-type dog! They're gorgeous. Anyways, have a great semester and I look forward to more of your stories!

  14. Hi Taylor! It’s cool that you’re a Graphic Designer! I got all my graphic design certifications in high school while going to a tech school, but I decided it wasn’t really for me. It’s a really fun job though! Your dogs are really cute too! I think it’s hilarious that the brother Chihuahua had his tongue sticking out! I can’t wait to read the rest of your posts!

  15. Hey Taylor! I am impressed by anyone that can draw. My mom was an interior design major, my dad is a land surveyor, and my brother draws stuff all of the time....I definitely did not get this gene because I cannot draw anything to save my life. Your dogs are so cute and those pictures make me miss my dogs back in Fort Worth. The lady I nanny for loves the show Big Brother and begs me to watch it so she has someone to talk about it with. I look forward to reading your stories!!

  16. I absolutely love your dog Aspen. I adore and prefer big dogs but I got a little one since I've been in college. I adore her but I think the bigger the dog the better they are for huggin. That's a very goofy look for Hunter though. It's a great picture. Too bad you didn't do anything over the summer but I know the feeling. Working at walmart is not exactly something to write about lol. I would much rather have stayed home watching reality shows and making lemon bars (even if they turned out bad).

  17. I have quite a few friends who are following the same degree path as you! I have a friend at OU in the vis comm program, and I have a friend in an animation program at a school in Florida. So, that's so cool!! I'm always in awe of people like you and them. I have little to NO imagination, and couldn't draw to save my life. I wish I was artistic, but it's just not in the cards for me. I also LOVE dogs. I don't have any (super sad face :( ), but as soon as I graduate I'll head to a shelter and pick up a pup.

  18. I am so jealous of your ability to draw, I cannot draw anything to save my life. Your love animals if wonderful! I have a very weird Chorkie (chihuahua and yorke mix) and one very fat, sassy cat. Both of which I love dearly even if they are annoying. I am desperately trying to adopt a malamute mix because I think they are such gorgeous sweet dogs. Yours in so cute, I just want to hug her.

  19. I am jealous. I wish that I had the talent to draw. When my major was interior design freshman year, one of the drawing assignments was to draw 50 hands and feet which was a little much for me but it was still fun. I am a crazy dog lady so I feel you on that. My dogs are at home in Chicago with my parents though so that is not fun. I hope you have a great rest of your semester!

  20. Hey Taylor, I absolutely love your dogs! I have a German Shepard mix that is the love of my life. I would like to think that I am an artist but I'm not haha. I start out doing something with paint and it going completely wrong so I end up with a mess and me calling it abstract. Nice to meet you!

  21. Taylor, your dogs are so cute! I think it's super cool how creative you are. I wish I could draw but I have the artistic ability of a 5 year old so there is little hope for me. Bears are definitely cool creatures but from a distance of course haha. I hope you get the chance to learn more about animation since you have such an interest in it. It's a pleasure to meet you and I'm looking forward to reading your stories.

  22. Hey Taylor, I think that it is great that you love art so much! I took Graphic Design in High school were I found out I didn't have the talent to become a Graphic Designer. I would never want to see a bear in the wild! So props to you for loving them so much! Aspen is SO PRETTY! I love malamutes! I want to get one when I have a place for it to go outside and play!

  23. Hey Taylor,

I love that you have so many dogs! At my parent's house we have three miniature dachschunds and while they're a handful sometimes, it's great to spend time with them. Also I think it's really cool that you're into drawing and graphic design because I'm so terrible at it.

Anyway, best of luck to you throughout the rest of the semester!

  24. Hi Taylor! That is so cool you're a vis comm major! My boyfriend and best friend are both studying the same thing so that's cool! I wish all the luck with that.
Your dogs are tooo cute. I also have a brown Chihuahua and he is a little punk. He does nothing but growl at people all day and once bit a hole in my Ugg boot. Needless to say, he sleeps outside now. haha
Hope your semester has went well!
